INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MONUMENTS AND SITES 2018
2018-04-20

The International Day of Monuments and Sites was established by ICOMOS on 18 April 1982 and was approved by UNESCO the following year. This commemorative event aims to raise the awareness of citizens about the diversity and vulnerability of heritage sites, as well as the efforts involved in the protection and appreciation of such sites. In 2018, the theme of the International Day of Monuments and Sites is "Cultural Heritage: from generation to generation." The Directorate General of Cultural Heritage (DGPC), in collaboration with ICOMOS Portugal, aims to disseminate this theme in order to foster inter-generational dialogue, as a tool to increase knowledge, development and diversity. In order to safeguard cultural heritage it is necessary to strengthen identity-based ties, foster dialogue between tradition and progress, assume the values of memory as levers of the future, stimulate intergenerational transfer of knowledge and reinforce information sharing, raising the awareness of young people, learning from older people, fostering intergenerational communication, learning more, preserving better, and cementing the importance of culture and heritage as a unifying element for communities.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MONUMENTS AND SITES 2017
2017-04-18

The International Day for Monuments and Sites was established by ICOMOS on 18 April 1982 and approved by UNESCO in the following year. This day aims to raise citizens’ awareness concerning the diversity and vulnerability of heritage sites, and the efforts associated to their protection and valorisation. The theme of the International Day for Monuments and Sites in 2017 is "Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism". In a period of significant economic-cultural globalization, major social transformations and an exponential increase in tourism levels, safeguarding, study, interpretation and presentation of heritage sites and the cultural diversity of territories and countries constitute a key vector of tourism, since such initiatives valorise cultural differences and enhance knowledge and respect between peoples. Access: free entrance to the Museum and Park, all day, including the Joan Miró exhibition.
6:30pm - GUIDED TOUR TO THE "ÁLVARO SIZA VIEIRA: VISIONS OF ALHAMBRA" EXHIBITION In 2011, the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira won a competition to create a new access and visitor centre for the Alhambra complex. This guided tour to the exhibition will introduce visitors to the set of drawings, sketches, scale models and video testimonials. Previously presented at the Aedes Architecture Forum, Berlin (2014), the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany (2014), the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, Granada (2015), the Nasjonalmuseet- Arkitektur, (2015) and the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto (2016), the exhibition presents the drawings and scale models that the architect produced while conceiving this new project. The exhibition thus offers privileged access to the architect's creative process.
Guided tour: António Choupina, curator of the exhibition Max. no. of participants: 30 Access: free, subject to collecting a ticket on the day, from 17:30 onwards.
7:00pm - DEBATE "ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE AND CONTEMPORARY INTERVENTION” Celebrating International Day for Monuments and Sites, in continuity with the topics covered by the exhibition "Álvaro Siza Vieira: Visions of Alhambra”, the Serralves Foundation presents a conversation on architectural heritage and contemporary intervention. For this purpose, various institutions will be represented, linked to the promotion and preservation of buildings and protected locations, debating the historical, pedagogical and socio-political contexts they face in their activity: from classification of the work of the architect Álvaro Siza to (re)building and gentrification of consolidated territories. The expanded tourism use of the Alhambra gardens, the Venice canals or the streets of Porto reveals architecture to be the great mediator of urban dialectics and cultural dynamics that we consider as Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
SPEAKERS: - José Aguiar (ICOMOS – PORTUGAL) - Ana Paula Amendoeira (ICOMOS – PORTUGAL) - Roberto Cremascoli (CO-CURATOR OF THE PORTUGUESE DELEGATION AT THE 2016 VENICE BIENNIALE) - Nuno Grande (CO-CURATOR OF THE PORTUGUESE DELEGATION AT THE 2016 VENICE BIENNIALE) - Ann Pitt (WENTWORTH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BOSTON) - Nuno Sampaio (EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PORTUGUESE ARCHITECTURAL CENTRE) - Ana Tostões (DOCOMOMO INTERNATIONAL)

DE 2014-09-26 a 2014-09-28

The European Heritage Days are an annual initiative organized by the Council of Europe and European Union, involving around 50 countries. The objective is to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and valuing heritage. Each year, different activities are organized in each country, with free access in most cases. Serralves is associated to this event through activities aimed at (re)discovering the Foundation’s built heritage and immaterial heritage - the Foundation’s architectural and landscape heritage was classified as a National Monument in 2012. Heritage - always a discovery The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage is
proposing the theme "Heritage - always a discovery" for the European
Heritage Days 2014. The goal is to draw attention to the constantly new
attractions offered by Cultural Heritage, which is always being updated through
new knowledge, perspectives and interpretations, in line with the evolution of
changing mentalities, ideas and fashions. This topic also aims to highlight the
tremendous potential of Cultural Heritage, whether built or immaterial, and its
enormous importance to ensuring balanced and harmonious social and economic
development and the overall role of culture in society. The permanent
rediscovery of Heritage also implies a constant rediscovery of our roots,
references and identity. It is therefore crucial to raise citizens’ awareness
in order to learn more about Heritage and foster its protection and recovery.

Three groups of young people from the Santo António educational centre, the Qualification for Inclusion Association and the North Therapeutic Community, will accompany the creation of a text, resulting from 3-days sessions with Marta Bernardes, João Pedro da Costa and Saguenail.
